On Couple Therapy:
I see as many couples as individuals. Often, couples come because their sexual or communication skills need attention. They want to recapture the sweetness and excitement they once felt for each other--to feel the same compassion for each other they feel for anyone in pain. I'm grateful to have heard many times that "This work has made all the difference in our relationship!"
It comes easily to me to be able to see each partner's side, and to communicate my support to both; successful couple therapy requires this. Perhaps my gifts as a couple therapist start with how much I value the possibilities and challenges of intimate partnership. It's so important for a couple therapist to understand (and teach couples to see) the priceless opportunity for spiritual and emotional growth their partnership offers.
Sex Therapy:
My book Ecstatic Lovemaking: An Intimate Guide to Souful Sex. It's a book that explains how a sacred approach to sexuality eases the solving of problems and the return to the lifelong passion which is everyone's birthright. If a couple has a history of strong attraction and enjoyable lovemaking, ten sessions or less may be enough to get them back on track in their intimate life.
Restoring libido, resolving frequency issues, fostering orgasms when desired, improving the length and quality of erections, negotiating preferences for some acts or positions over others--these are all the daily fare of sex therapy, as is learning to skillfully and lovingly communicate your sexual desires and needs. Once medical problems have been ruled out or treated by a physician, I can often help you easily address concerns like these.
If you have physical limitations or health problems, you most certainly don't need to give up on sex. Even quadaplegia need not be a barrier to satisfying sex. Nor is aging and the body changes that go with it. The young and buff have no corner on joyful lovemaking! It's all about having an open heart."
Individual Therapy:
Most of my clients are very successful in important areas of their lives. Being courageous and self-aware, they notice when the wounds of childhood continually intrude. I provide the tools for change--skills learned over 25 years as a psychotherapist. It is most definitely possible to heal childhood and to replace old anger and sadness with compassion for yourself and for those who raised you! Achieving that gives you true freedom from the past. Each way in which we cling to the idea that our parents failed us and deserve to suffer for it limits our freedom.
As Rumi says:
When you think your father is guilty
of an injustice, his face looks cruel....
When you make peace
with your father, he will look peaceful....
Make peace with the universe.
Take joy in it. It wll turn to gold.
Every moment a new beauty!
Rumi: a source of great wisdom
Rumi, Hafiz, Mary Oliver and other soul poets inspire me in my own journey and in my work. My book on Rumi offers many examples of how the great soul's wisdom applies to every area of our lives. In my book "a psychologist speaks of love, sex, grief and joy as spiritual practice." Click here to learn about The Rumi Secret: Spiritual Lessons of History's Most Revered Poet
Courageous Dying:
If you are facing your own or someone else's life-threatening illness or death, I stand ready to support you on your journey. It has been my privilege to be at the bedside of dying people offering support both to them and to the family. It is possible to loose your fear of death, and that too offers great freedom. There's nothing to fear!
Coaching:
Some clients come for coaching rather than for healing of the past. They want to increase their sales or their profits. They want to make career changes, grow their companies, or learn to become more effective managers or team leaders.
With these clients, our process starts with immediate goal setting and prioritizing, followed by establishing a clear, detailed and written Plan of Action. The Plan includes time lines which we will systematically track.
Since I have personal experience in the fields of education, real estate and community organizing, I am especially knowledgeable in these arenas. I have also coached many clients in technical, engineering and start-up situations. Feel free to question me about my background in your areas of concern.
Email and Phone Work:
Coaching lends itself especially well to working by phone and email; geographic distance is no barrier. If you can come in for an initial consultation, it gives us a faster start. But we can still work together very successfully if you live in another state or country.
My professional background:
I have been a psychologist since 1988 (PSY10652), and was first licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I am a past-President of Santa Clara Valley Marriage and Family Therapists in Silicon Valley and was the Director of the Master's in Counseling Psychology at College of Notre Dame. I have taught at John F. Kennedy University and San Jose State University. I have extensive experience in the training and supervision of therapists, and have led workshops and spoken at conferences internationally.
Either or both of my books may make a difference on your journey. They are:
Ecstatic Lovemaking: An Intimate Guide to Soulful Sex and
The Rumi Secret: Spiritual Lessons of History's Most Revered Poet
